Panchabhuta Conservation Foundation (PCF), a small community NGO based in Kagal, Karnataka, near the hyper-biodiverse Aghanashini River estuary, is seeking applicants for its ongoing fellowship program focused on research and action for sustainable development and conservation.
At present, PCF is recruiting research fellows to assist an ongoing project related to mangrove conservation. The project includes:
- A detailed household survey of dependence on and conservation attitudes toward mangrove ecosystem services (primary work)
- An education component working with local school children regarding mangroves
- Organizing community stakeholder meetings to discuss mangrove management/conservation
Fellows will gain training / skills in social science research methods and design, social ecological systems, culture/history of rural coastal India and the practice of conservation and development.
The fellowship’s start date is flexible (ideally by 13 June); depending on start time and project needs, fellows may work one to two months on this project.
Minimum requirements:
- Indian citizenship
- STRONG fluency in Kannada AND English.
- A bachelor’s degree in social science, sustainable development, conservation, ecology, environmental science or other related subjects
- Strong interest in conducting field research, translation, community outreach and development work
- Physical fitness enough to work in hot weather out of doors
Exceptional candidates will also have some of the following:
- A master’s degree in one of the aforementioned fields
- A smartphone or tablet running at least Android 4
- Ties to or interest in coastal environs / communities and, in particular, Uttara Kannada
The fellowship will be filled as quickly as a suitable candidate applys.
PCF fellows will be based at our beautiful beachside field station in coastal Karnataka’s Kumta Taluk, just south of the Aghanashini River mouth. Fellows are supported by PCF and are expected to work full-time. As compensation, they receive shared accommodation, meals, payment of approved work-related expenses, paid bus travel from and to Bangalore (at the start and end of the fellowship) and a small monthly stipend.
